Squirrels don’t eat daffodils! Esquilos não comem narcisos!

One of the first things I have learned from my friend, Vicky, when I arrived in England last year, was that squirrels don’t eat daffodils! This, because I asked her why the daffodils were all around…

Uma das primeiras coisas que aprendi com minha amiga Vicky, quando cheguei na Inglaterra, no ano passado, foi que esquilos não comem narcisos! Isto, por que perguntei-lhe o porquê de tantos narcisos crescerem nas redondezas.

For reasons she couldn’t explain me at that time, squirrels don’t like them or, maybe, they know that daffodils aren’t good for them. (Actually, I have discovered later, that the bulb has a very poisonous alkaloid).

 Por razões que ela não soube explicar-me na época, os esquilos não gostam deles ou, talvez, saibam que os narcisos não lhes fazem bem. (Na verdade, depois eu descobri que o bulbo contém um alcalóide extremamente venenoso).

Therefore, in winter, when they are fasting, they eat many of the other bulbs they can find in the ground – tulips, lilies…except the daffodils.

Desta forma, no inverno, quando estão famintos, eles comem quase todos os bulbos que encontram no solo – tulipas, lírios…com exceção dos narcisos.

Despite their toxicity, the good thing about this  is that the daffodils bulbs sprout every year in the beginning of Spring, covering large areas in the fields with a vibrant yellow &/or white carpet of flowers. A true show for our eyes!

A despeito de sua toxicidade, a coisa boa disto é que os bulbos dos narcisos brotam todos os anos, no começo da primavera, cobrindo grandes áreas do campo, com um tapete de flores amarelas &/ou brancas vibrante. Um verdadeiro espetáculo para os olhos.
